Why the Ruark R710 is the music centre we've been waiting for

Every hi-fi conversation eventually gets to the same question: "Does it play CDs?" For most streaming amplifiers, the answer is a shrug and an add-on box. Ruark's answer, in its 40th anniversary year, is the R710 — a proper music console with a slot-loading CD player hidden so neatly behind the walnut slats that people ask where it is.

The R710 takes everything that made the R610 a What Hi-Fi? Award winner — the streaming platform, the phono stage, the HDMI eARC, the RotoDial — and builds it out for the serious listener: the CD player, a headphone jack, a bigger 6.8-inch display, and a jump from 75 to 200 watts per channel. Where the R610 is at home with bookshelf speakers, the R710 was designed alongside Ruark's revived Talisman-R floorstanders (a name first launched in 1990) and has the headroom to run them properly, or any serious passive speaker you already own.

Sound: effortless power, from disc or stream

The R710 is built around a custom switch-mode power supply feeding purpose-designed Class D amplifier stages, with short signal paths and careful grounding for low noise. Burr-Brown handles both the DAC and ADC at 32-bit / 192kHz, and the quoted frequency response is 22Hz–22kHz (+0/−3dB) — the same reach as the R610, but with more than two and a half times the power behind it.

That's the difference you hear. Where a 75W amplifier starts to work hard, the R710 stays relaxed: bass stays controlled at volume, dynamics land with weight, and big speakers like the Talisman-R open up rather than tightening. Ruark describes the character as effortless, and it's the right word — the R710 doesn't chase excitement, it lets the recording provide it.

CD playback is uncompressed, so a well-mastered disc through the R710 is as good as the source gets. Adjustable bass and treble (±6dB), switchable Loudness EQ, a Stereo+ wide mode, and the subwoofer output let you tune it to your room without menu-diving.

Design: the 70s hi-fi console, done properly

The R710 is what a music centre would look like if it had been designed today by people who still love the originals. The vertical walnut slats span the full front and hide the CD slot; the 6.8-inch display sits on the left, big enough to read album art from across the room; and the RotoDial on top means the whole system can be run without picking up a remote. It's wider and deeper than the R610 (375 × 310mm) and weighs 6.6kg — substantial, but still a single, tidy box.
