Why the Talisman-R is back

In 1990, most hi-fi speakers were rectangular boxes you tolerated for the sound. Ruark's original Talisman was different: slim, with a sloped baffle and real wood, it made people fall for how a speaker looked before they'd heard it play. It belonged in a living room, not a listening room — and it became the speaker that defined what Ruark stood for.

Thirty-six years on, in Ruark's 40th anniversary year, the Talisman-R brings that idea back with everything the company has learned since. The silhouette is still slim and the baffle is still the point — now it's decoupled from the cabinet on elastomer bushes, so the drivers do the moving and the cabinet stays silent. Inside, a custom 6.5-inch NS+ woofer and a silk dome tweeter sit behind a carefully phase-matched crossover; underneath, a solid steel plinth gives the whole thing a floating stance.

Ruark built the Talisman-R alongside the R710 CD Hi-Fi Console — 200 watts per channel with a speaker to match — and the pair are the complete system Ruark had in mind. But with 87dB sensitivity and a 6-ohm load, the Talisman-R is an easy partner for the R610, or any good amplifier from about 50 watts up. Sound: natural, open, and bigger than the box

Ruark voices its speakers for people who listen to music, not test tones, and the Talisman-R follows the house style: natural fibre and silk rather than metal, a crossover tuned for phase coherence rather than a flat-line spec sheet, and a bass alignment that favours control over boom. The result is a quoted in-room response of 40Hz–22kHz — real bass weight from a cabinet only 21cm wide — and a stereo image that steps well clear of the speakers.

The decoupled baffle is what you notice most. With the drivers isolated from the enclosure, the cabinet stops adding its own voice, so midrange stays clean at volume and vocals sit in space rather than in a box. Feed it a well-recorded CD through the R710 and the presentation is exactly what Ruark promises: lifelike, engaging, and easy to listen to for hours.

At 87dB and 6 ohms (3.8-ohm minimum at 5kHz), the Talisman-R doesn't need a monster amplifier, but it rewards a good one. Fifty clean watts will do; the R710's 200 per channel is where it really opens up.

Design: a speaker that belongs in the room

The Talisman-R keeps the original's proportions — tall, narrow, and unfussy — and adds the 100 Series details that tie it to the R610 and R710: the walnut or charcoal baffle, the mottled fabric grille, the exposed fixings that double as a design signature. Underneath, the solid steel plinth lifts the cabinet just off the floor for a floating look and a planted stance; adjustable feet or spikes level it on any surface.

Placement note: the rear-facing dual port means the Talisman-R likes a little room behind it — 20–30cm from the wall is a good start, and you can tune bass weight by moving it closer or further. Each speaker is 85cm tall and 17.6kg; leave the grilles on for the furniture look or off for a touch more air.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the price per pair or per speaker? Per pair. Each speaker ships in its own carton with its own feet and spikes.

Are the Talisman-R active or passive? Passive. They need an amplifier — Ruark recommends 50–250 watts per channel. The R710 (200W) and R610 (75W) are both a good match.

What's the difference between the Talisman-R and the Sabre-R? The Sabre-R is a compact two-way bookshelf speaker; the Talisman-R is a floorstander with a larger 6.5" NS+ woofer, a 14.5-litre reflex cabinet reaching down to 40Hz, a decoupled baffle, and a steel plinth. Same tweeter philosophy, same finishes, considerably more bass and scale.

Do I need a subwoofer? For music, most people won't. The Talisman-R is tuned to 42Hz and reaches 40Hz in-room. For film, the R710 and R610 both have a subwoofer output if you want to add the Ruark RS1.

Can I bi-wire or bi-amp them? Yes — dual gold-plated 4mm binding posts with removable links, accepting banana plugs, spades, or bare wire.

How far from the wall should they sit? Start around 20–30cm from the rear wall and adjust: closer for more bass weight, further for a tighter, more open sound.

Carpet or hard floor? Both. Rubber cone feet and carpet spikes are included; both are adjustable for levelling.

What are the visible bolts on the front? They're part of the decoupled baffle system — the baffle is secured through elastomer bushes so driver vibration doesn't pass into the cabinet. Ruark chose to leave them visible rather than hide the engineering.

Do the grilles come off? Yes, they're magnetic. Leave them on for the furniture look or take them off for a slightly more open top end.
