Ophidian Ffion Speakers — Small Footprint. Full-Range Soul.
Meet the Ophidian Ffion: a hand-built British high-end floorstanding loudspeaker designed and assembled in the UK by Ophidian Audio founder Gareth James.
If you have ever wished a stand-mount could sound bigger, or wished a floorstander could disappear into a real-world living room, this is the speaker that hands you both wishes on a single, beautifully tapered cabinet.
A Cabinet That Earns Its Shape
The Ffion's truncated-obelisk silhouette is not styling for the sake of it. The cabinet tapers from base to top, both side-to-side and front-to-back, which kills internal standing waves before they have a chance to muddy a vocal line. Walls and internal bracing are built from 18mm HDF for serious rigidity, and the front baffle is narrow enough that the 22mm soft-dome tweeter and 125mm aluminium midrange behave like a single point source from 170Hz upwards. Translation: a soundstage that's wide, deep, and unnervingly precise.
Down at the bottom of the cabinet, an 8-inch (200mm) paper-cone woofer fires straight at the floor. It is loaded by Ophidian's trademark Aeroflex hybrid system — part transmission line, part vented — and tuned to reach 30Hz with the speed of a sealed box and the weight of a much larger floorstander. No room boom. No bass bloat. Just bass that lands when the music asks for it.
Driver Engineering, Without the Marketing Smoke
- 22mm soft-dome tweeter with a wide roll surround for wide, even off-axis dispersion — the kind of treble that survives standing up and walking around the room.
- 125mm alloy mid-range driver with a solid aluminium phase plug and dual shorting paths in the voice coil for ultra-low distortion vocals.
- 200mm down-firing paper bass driver in a sealed lower sub-chamber, Aeroflex-loaded, for fast and tuneful low end that's also room-friendly to position.
- 2nd-order crossover at 170Hz and 2.5kHz, with each driver running comfortably inside its low-distortion sweet spot — not flogged near breakup.
What the Reviewers and Dealers Are Saying
The Ear (Kevin Fiske) describes the Ffion's stereo image as simply mesmerising, and pegs its grip on distortion as class-leading, calling it a sophisticated transducer that outperforms speakers at well over twice its price.
HiFi Pig (Ian Ringstead) reckons Gareth James has hit a home run, praising the Ffion as superb value at its price point and a fully realised design from a maker with decades of experience — high recommendation, with a nod toward "build a system that will last a lifetime."
Adventures in Hi-Fi, a UK specialist dealer, summed up their demo-room experience by saying the Ffion is "a touch of class" — and admitted that since the speakers arrived, they have barely had them out of the demo room.
Hi-Fi Choice and HiFi News both covered the launch, with HiFi News flagging the Ffion as a debut highlight at the North West Audio Show, where it was widely tipped as one of the show's standouts. On YouTube, a popular dealer channel titled their hands-on simply: "My New Favourite Speakers — The Ophidian Ffion." That, frankly, says enough.

Who the Ophidian Ffion Is For
The Ffion is built for the serious listener who wants full-range sound without surrendering half the living room to it. It thrives in rooms from cosy to medium-large, rewards careful amplifier matching (think clean, musical 50–200W per channel), and pays back the investment with the kind of long-term satisfaction that ends the upgrade itch. If you love the precision of a great stand-mount but cannot live without genuine low-end weight, the Ffion is the British-built answer.
Finishes
Available in walnut veneer or any RAL colour lacquer for a fully bespoke look — match it to your room, your records, or your own quietly stubborn taste.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Ophidian Ffion a true full-range floorstander?
Yes. With a -3dB low-frequency extension to 32Hz and an upper limit of 25kHz, the Ffion delivers genuine full-range performance from a cabinet smaller than most floorstanders in its class.
What amplifier should I use with the Ophidian Ffion?
Any clean, musical amplifier rated between 50 and 200 watts per channel into 6 ohms will drive the Ffion comfortably. Its 87dB sensitivity makes it friendly to both solid-state and higher-powered tube designs.
Does the down-firing woofer cause room placement problems?
On the contrary — the down-firing 8-inch bass driver, combined with Aeroflex loading, makes the Ffion notably room-friendly and forgiving of placement compared to traditional rear- or front-ported floorstanders.
Where is the Ophidian Ffion made?
Every Ophidian Ffion loudspeaker is designed, assembled, and hand-finished in the United Kingdom by Ophidian Audio, founded by speaker designer Gareth James in 2011.
