The woofer fires at the floor from a sealed chamber, so the top of the cabinet can be as narrow as a standmount.

Everything above 170 Hz comes from the narrow top of the cabinet, so the tweeter and midrange behave like one source.
The cabinet tapers from base to top on both axes, so no two internal walls face each other and standing waves have nowhere to build.

About the Ophidian Ffion Floorstanding Speakers
Ophidian Ffion: narrow where the tweeter is, wide where the bass is, and tapered so no two walls face each other
The Ffion is a three-way floorstander 1,020 mm tall. Its 200 mm woofer fires downward from a sealed lower chamber, and the Aeroflex channel runs up the rear of the cabinet to a mouth at the top rear, so the upper cabinet can taper to 132 mm and the 22 mm dome and 125 mm aluminium midrange behave like one source from 170 Hz up. The taper runs on both axes, from 264 mm at the base, so no two internal walls face each other and standing waves have nowhere to build. The rated low-frequency limit is 32 Hz.
What is inside
The midrange is a 125 mm aluminium cone with a solid aluminium phase plug and dual shorting paths in the voice coil. The tweeter is a 22 mm soft dome with a wide roll surround for even off-axis dispersion. The crossover is second order at 170 Hz and 2.5 kHz, built from Mundorf parts on three separate boards. Cabinet walls and bracing are 18 mm HDF; terminals are WBT.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Ffion a full-range floorstander?
Yes. It is rated to 32 Hz at the bottom and 25 kHz at the top, from a cabinet 1,020 mm tall and 264 mm wide at the base.
Does the down-firing woofer make placement difficult?
The reviewers found the opposite; HiFi Pig called it not too fussy about room placement. The port mouth is at the top rear, well above the floor.
What amplifier should I use?
Ophidian recommends 50 to 200 W per channel into 6 ohms. At 87 dB it is friendly to solid-state and higher-powered valve amplifiers.
What finishes are available?
Walnut real wood veneer, or a 16-layer lacquer in any RAL colour.
